Largest Skate Park in Metro Detroit Opens

Riley Skate Park — a 29,000-square-foot concrete facility in Founders Park is the largest facility of its type in Metro Detroit.
Located in Farmington Hills, the entrance features a steel replica of two skaters performing tricks on a half-pipe towering 18 feet in the air on two columns. The park itself is a mix of plaza-style skateboarding with benches, rails and stairs. It also has the extreme style by featuring ramps and skating bowls with snake runs, a capsule and clamshell overhangs typically seen on the West Coast, said recreation supervisor Bryan Farmer.
The planning for Riley Skate Park began in 2005, with the formation of a Skate Park Committee and input from members of the community. In 2006, philanthropist George Riley and the Riley Foundation donated $500,000 to the project, plus subsequently matched additional funds that were raised. In all, 30 different fund-raisers took place to help fund the Park.
Riley Skate Park will host local and national competitions, as well as skate camps and special events. It is expected to draw thousands of skateboarders and in-line skaters from across the Midwest.
