Memorial Day 2009 in Metro Detroit

This monumental by Marshall Fredericks is on the north wall of what was the Veterans Memorial Building. It symbolizes both sacrifice and victory. Today the building is the UAW-Ford National Programs Center.
Originally called Decoration Day, Monday May 25, 2009 is a day to remember the brave men and women who have died serving our nation. To date, Michigan has lost 167 service members in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.
To remind Americans of the true meaning of Memorial Day, the “National Moment of Remembrance” resolution was passed on December 2000. This resolution asks that at 3 p.m. local time all Americans “remember and reflect on the sacrifices made by so many to provide freedom for all.”
